Expensive Diaper Bag is Well Worth its Price

Oct 06 2008 by Courtney Messenbaugh

After a couple of days of testing the Bedford Nylon Kate bag by MZ Wallace, which costs $390, I knew that I had to have it.

Let me explain: For the past couple of years, I’ve been searching for the perfect handbag. By handbag, I mean carryall; by carryall, I mean carryALL. Depending on the day, I’m either toting my laptop and other work necessities or diapers and wipes galore, changes of clothing for my kids and myriad snacks. Often, in what I like to call the “modern mom special,” I’m toting all of the above.

Well, I finally and unfortunately found the perfect bag. It’s the Bedford Nylon Kate bag (www.mzwallace.com), and it’s unfortunate because it retails for $390. I’m a girl who’s not afraid to plop down some cash when she really likes something. But I’m also practical, and $400 seemed a little much for something that houses dirty diapers, is a spit-up target and is trampled on by my terrifically toddling toddler.

But after only a few days of test-driving this bag, I had to own it. So…I sucked it up and bought it. I bought it right after having my second child last month; I justified it by telling myself that I deserved a nice gift after undergoing my second Caesarean section in less than two years.

The fact is it’s roomy enough to carry all of my stuff and do it in an organized fashion. It has four exterior zipper pockets of varying sizes, two elasticized bottle pockets on the sides and 10 interior pockets to accommodate business cards, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, iPhone, wipes and whatever else you’re carrying. Everything gets its own little pocket, which makes it all very easy to find. There’s also a detachable change purse that’s just the right size for holding your lip gloss, credit cards, cash and phone when you don’t want to haul the whole bag with you.

A few other goodies worth mentioning include a changing pad that’s nice and cushy for your baby’s tushie; leather feet on the bag’s bottom; super-high-quality zippers (I’m a total sucker for good zippers); and, perhaps the most mom-friendly feature of all is that it’s water- and stain-resistant.

As for style, this bag rocks: Mine is a funky, fun orange (though it also comes in black, plum and a rose print) with a satiny cerulean blue interior, brown leather straps and gold hardware. I’ve gotten compliments on this bag from everyone. One of my single gal pals wants one of her own; a couple of too-cool-for-school teenage girls in the mall stopped me to tell me how fab it is; and, even men have commented on its chicness.

Now, no matter how big the bags under my eyes are from being up all night with my newborn or how dirty my clothes and hair are from my toddler’s messy paws, this bag makes me feel and look chic. And it carries all of my stuff. I know it’s pricey, but a bag can’t get any better than this!
