Rocketron Delivers News via Cell Phone
Dec 17 2008 by Emily Hansen
I love to listen to the news in my car, but sometimes I have to turn the radio down when a story is a little inappropriate for my kiddos. I don’t have to miss out on the news anymore with Rocketron, a timely newscast you can access with your cell phone.
The voice-activated service offers news in lots of categories; my favorite is technology, but you can also specify politics, international news, sports and several others, just by saying “_____news.” There’s a companion website that allows you to list keywords of subjects that are important to you. I put iPhone on my must-hear list and basketball on my please-don’t-bore-me-with-it list.
I used the service several times and have decided I like it best when I have my wireless headset on. My kids can listen to the kids’ music channel on satellite radio, my teenager can tune into his iPod and I can happily listen to the day’s news. Best of all, no one complains. I do make an effort to interact with my kids, but I’ve decided to give myself this break just because we spend so much time in our car. The service is free; it’s supported by the occasional ad, so far that’s been tolerable. I think this has potential use outside of my car, like when I’m at the doctor’s office waiting room or one of my kid’s soccer practice.
Now if someone could just explain to me how they named this site and what on earth the name has to do with a creative new way to deliver news, I’d feel much better.

Thanks for the nod our way, Emily. The only thing to add is the phone number to use for Rocketron is 408.907.2323. You can try it without signing up on their web site (although we’d appreciate it if you would).
