Volvo Gets Dads and Kids Talking

Automaker Suggests Using Car Time to Reconnect
It’s almost Father’s Day, and Volvo is helping families reconnect. You know, chat the kids up. The automaker helps get the conversational ball rolling in its “Hit the Road Talking, With Dad.” Oddly enough, it doesn’t suggest starting with, “You better start talking or so help me I’ll pull this car over!” I thought I’d clarify some of Volvo’s ideas in case there’s confusion.
Volvo suggests taking advantage of car time to and from sporting practice and events to talk about the game. You know, talk strategy or give perspective on winning and losing. You probably should not coach your kids on how to say “Loser!” in five languages. I’d also like to encourage our sporty carpooling dads to discuss selection of the best orange wedges for proper hydration.
The automaker offers some edgier conversation points including, “What got you in trouble growing up, Dad?” Unearthing a parent’s mischievous behavior can bring on some fantastic bonding. I’d suggest that dads save tips on evading law enforcement until the kids are a bit older.
Also, Volvo suggests parents “tackle some serious conversation topics to make a lasting and meaningful connection with your kids.” On a serious note, we’ve gone through quite a bit as a family this year, and I have to say my kids did so much of their talking and processing in the car. Maybe they knew they had a captive audience. Volvo suggests you have a conversation with your kids, not “endlessly yammer at your kids.” I’m just saying that because I totally yammer.
Another idea is providing early driving lessons. This does not mean placing the child on your lap so they can steer. Teach kids a few safe-driving basics during their journeys with Dad. Younger children can read road signs and learn about speed limits. Older kids can learn about being aware of the cars around you. While they don’t directly endorse an active game of Slug Bug, they do suggest teaching kids to keep their eyes not only on the car directly in front of them, but also one or two cars ahead. And hey, if it scores them a Slug Bug, all the better.
Maybe next year, Volvo will offer up a release on Finding Your Families’ Zen in the Car: Beyond the Quiet Game.
