Crazy Car Colors

What’s Your Favorite Car Color?

After venturing out on the floor of a couple of big auto shows in Detroit and Chicago this year, one thing in particular struck me: The variety of car colors out there is astounding. Most notably, colors I haven’t seen since the ’70s are back in a big way (not that I was even BORN then, that’s just what I hear…). Anyway, lots of browns, oranges and greens are out in force, gracing the curves of the most modern concept cars.

The Toyota Venza showed up in a metallic tan, as did the Lincoln MKT. I’m excited to hear what the manufacturers come up with as the official names of these browns. Champagne, Opulent Sand, Toasted Sesame and Moonlight Dune come to mind. Some people were surprised Toyota and Lincoln came out so low-key, but I loved the colors on those cars.

Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler unveiled new concepts in orange, green and blue, respectively. Sorry, I mean Mandarin Flambe, Cargo Bean and Atlantic Mist. Personally, I loved Hyundai’s Genesis coupe concept in a bright orange with what appeared to be an integrated yellow metallic paint. I wouldn’t even call it a top coat; it seemed layered in. Looking at the car one way, it was Mandarin Flambe, but from another angle it was Hot Gold. Ooh! Mandarin Gold! Whatever Hyundai calls it, it was beautiful.

In stark contrast to some of the stunning paint jobs at the shows, though, DuPont announced that 2007’s most popular car color was white (and White Pearl). Du Pont is the leading manufacturer of car paint, so it should know.

Some have speculated that white is most popular because that’s what commercial and rental car companies tend to purchase more of, as logos and signs are very visible on a white background. Now, I’m not one to stir the pot. I love color, and I even love white, but flat white on cars leaves me, well, flat. My best name for white is “Dull Shade of Boring and Even More Boring.”  What about you? What’s your favorite car color? Let us know in the comments section below.

I too do not like white cars. I dont understand why people shell out tons of money on a new car and pick white for the color. I have a metallic dark amythest 07 Ford edge that I love.
