A Positive Parenting Star is Born
My success in handling kiddy challenges has been greatly bolstered by the offering of choices — an instrumental parenting tool both at home and on the road. No need to blow a fuse over an insatiable desire for more when I can smilingly say, “Would you care to have your three-flavored ice cream sundae with hot fudge, caramel, whipped cream and sprinkles with ONE cherry or NO cherries?” Basically, choices simplify parenting without compromising your objectives.
Knowing this as I do, I was interested to learn more about My Choice Chart, a positive-parenting product created by a mother after an incident she perceived as a mishandled learning opportunity. (It’s nice to know we’re not alone, huh?) With the help of her preschool daughter, the My Choice Chart was born.
The whimsical 12-inch square magnetic chart is framed with a border of inspirational messages, and there’s an included dry-erase marker so your kids can personalize theirs. Each time my boys made a “star choice,” like slipping into their boots and getting out the door cheetah-style, they put a star on the chart. Parents are encouraged to do the same anytime they notice star behavior, and during our time with the chart I witnessed a lot of it — which certainly benefited my blood pressure. As their stars filled up the dark sky on the chart, I saw the pride increase in my boys’ eyes.
In case you get so addicted to all those good deeds and star choices that you can’t bear to be away from your chart, it’s a cinch to travel with; it can be transported in its own bag. On a weekend getaway, we opted to bring our new parenting buddy, and the clear plastic bag allowed our 3-year-old to witness his progress en route. I could barely contain my delight when he added a magnetic star to the night sky after kindly asking his brother to please stop hitting. WOW!
