Teh Roddler!

Tricked-Out Stroller Has Kids Riding in Style

I push my son around in a Bugaboo Chameleon stroller, which I thought made me as hip as a hot Hollywood mama. My delusional hipster status, however, came to a screeching halt when I ran across the Roddler, a hot-rod stroller that makes the Bugaboo seem like a cheap facsimile of cool.

The Roddler’s cool factor is astronomical, and by astronomical I mean to say that it looks like something an astronaut might use on the moon. People are going nuts over this thing, with lots of orders already in, or so I’m told. I’m keeping my peepers peeled for moms at the mall wheeling one of these around.

The kicker is that the Roddler costs $2,500. What do you get on a stroller that costs that much? How about a DVD entertainment system, iPod dock, built-in cupholders, Bluetooth connectivity and a multifunction computerized display? Seriously. You can go even further into excess by finishing the seat in supple ostrich, stingray, alligator, alcantara or plain old cow hide (that’s leather to you and me, but, um, what is alcantara?). Finally, you can order custom fenders and wheels based on hot-rod Caddys and Buicks of the olden days. Sounds pretty posh, doesn’t it?

The folks behind the Roddler say having one will be like having a history lesson on wheels for your child, as they’ll help kids learn about that storied period of our nation’s development: the Hot Rod Age. When exactly was that? Between the Ice Age and the Industrial Revolution? I don’t know about your kid, but my 1-year-old pretty much just hangs out in his stroller making random noises and pointing at things, not taking notes on how his ride fits into the fabric of his country’s folklore.

I feel bad enough having a $900 Bugaboo (which the grandparents purchased, by the way). Seeing how much spilled milk, vestiges of long-ago-eaten food, sunscreen, spit-up, etc., we’ve managed to trash it with, I think I’ll just stick with the Bugaboo and let the Hollywood hotties buy the Roddler. I’m just not hip — or rich — enough for this one.

And I thought my Peg Perego was extravagant... I am down to a $10 umbrella at this point and now I will just smile with glee each time I use it.

That thing is hideous and just goes to show people with money have no taste. Why would I want to go on a walk with my son on a beautiful summer day only to have him stare into a DVD entertainment system or listening to an IPOD. Whatever happened to raising a child on books, music, and LIFE?!
