Ford Steps Up to Fight Breast Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute, women have a one in eight chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Think about this statistic in terms of the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” and it suddenly seems like the odds are pretty good that all of us know or will know someone with breast cancer. Or, it could be us. Isn’t that reason enough to be vigilant warriors against this disease?

We first told you about Ford’s Warriors in Pink program when its cool, tattoo-like graphics sucked us in. The program’s message touches so many women that I’m proud to say we are now hooked. This year Ford brought even more attention to the campaign by selecting Kelly Clarkson as its spokesperson. She’s got high fan appeal, being the first winner of “American Idol,” and she remains one of that show’s most successful winners. Now, Ford is putting all that love to good use.

The Warriors in Pink campaign raises money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization by selling Warriors in Pink gear, including some very cool T-shirts sporting “symbols of the warrior” graphics. All proceeds support the cause. On the Warriors in Pink website, you can buy your own swag and see Kelly customizing shirts with a handy-dandy pair of scissors. For all of you hipsters, you can even download instructions on how to “rock” up your shirt, a la Kelly. My daughter and I did this and had a blast with the project. She’ll be sporting our creation when we attend this year’s Komen Race for the Cure. (Just so you know, the sizing on the babydoll is a little small, so order up.)

For truly hardcore Warriors, there’s a Warriors in Pink package available on the 2008 Mustang coupe and convertible. Available on silver, white or black Mustangs, the package includes a cool pink stripe near the bottom of the doors, pink stitching on the seats and steering wheel, and a cool badge on the side of the car that features the Mustang logo atop a pink awareness ribbon. You walk away with a fun conversation-starter of a car, and Komen for the Cure gets $250 from the sale of each package.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and many cities will host Komen Race for the Cure events, so this is a great time to get some gear of your own, and maybe even do a little destruction for this worthy cause. Wear your warrior badge on your sleeve — literally! If you’re not a runner, get a Warrior Mustang and maybe they’ll let you Drive for the Cure instead.
