The Smart (and free) way to Edge-ucate Teens.

Tested: 8/1/2006 to 8/2/2006

Driver's Edge

My children are not quite old enough for me to start the inevitable worrying process that ensues for all parents when their teens learn to drive. With automobile accidents being the leading cause of death amongst teens in the U.S., maybe I should start all that worrying sooner than planned, like today!

Traditional driver’s education is perceived by the teens I spoke with as “pointless,” “useless,” and “boring.” This should make us reconsider the system and wonder what good it really does.

Enter Driver’s Edge: the smartest and fee-less way to educate young drivers from 15 to 21. Founded by Jeff Payne, a former professional racecar driver, Driver’s Edge was born out of his frustration over people blaming teens for accidents when they simply haven’t been given the tools to handle such challenging driving scenarios. “This class is a reality check and a wakeup call to teens on one end, and a confidence booster on the other. The two work really well together,” Jeff says.

The half-day free (we love that) clinic takes teens and their parents, who often need the course as much if not more than their kids, through four interactive ‘Edge-ucation Stations’: Traffic safety, braking and lane changes, skid control and car care.

Perhaps the most entertaining session of the day is the Car Care class. Sure, the instructor runs through the expected basics, but what makes the monologue (the term speech just doesn’t do it justice) so engaging is that he goes way beyond to cheekily dish out life and relationship lessons.

“Put your freakin’ seatbelts on.” “Parents, get off your kids backs…just a little.” My favorite, “Guys, you better learn this lesson now: Women rule the world.”

Driver’s Edge students have reported a 53% reduction in collisions. Of Driver’s Edge students who were polled, 100% feel the course is valuable and would recommend it to a friend, and 100% of students feel it makes them safer and more aware drivers. These overwhelmingly positive results are concrete proof to the validity of Driver’s Edge, and the reason why it’s the first driving program to earn the Mother Proof™ Seal of Approval. Congrats, guys and keep up the good work (at least until my kids are old enough to drive).

Driver’s Edge is a non-profit that is completely funded by grants, sponsorships and donations. If you’re in a place to assist in any way, Driver’s Edge is always looking to grow and expand (don’t forget to share the love with Mother Proof, too). With assistance from their team of supporters including Bridgestone Tires, Firestone Complete Auto Care, CarMax and the CarMax Foundation, the Indy Racing League and Red Bull, Driver’s Edge will be touring to a city near you.
