A Booster Worth Yawning About

What’s a mom to do when her still-napping-in-the-car children outgrow their car seats? I think I’ve caused permanent chiropractic damage to my 5-year-old who has spent way too many car trips sleeping slumped over the armrest of her booster seat. That can’t possibly be good for her!

At Mother Proof, we spend all day every day driving around testing cars, so it’s important that our children be in safety seats worth spending time in. Thanks to the kind people at One Step Ahead, we’ve finally found a booster seat that our children can comfortably sleep in without suffering from that horrible, but all too typical, spine-wrenching sleep slump.

The safety gurus a Britax have developed True Side Impact Protection™ that “has been confirmed…to better contain a child in dangerous side-impact crashes.” Of course, the unintended after-effect is that it also better contains a child while napping.

The head restraint of the Parkway Booster has wings that wrap around to support the sides of the child’s head. My daughter climbs right in and loves this seat from the start. She immediately points out that this seat is “so much more cushy,” due to the Comfort Foam on the seat bottom and back.

The underside of the Parkway Booster Seat features slip resistant strips that help keep it from sliding all over leather car upholstery.

The one downside to this booster seat is that the retractable cupholders are too shallow to actually hold cups. Well, they hold cups while the car is standing still, but at the first sign of acceleration or breaking, cups go tumbling. It does, however, work just fine for snacks and small toys.

When my children are at each other’s necks and completely wound up, a nice long car trip and some slow relaxing music does a world of good to lull them to compliance and hopefully to sleep as well. Now, with the Britax Parkway Booster in our arsenal, the whole family is comfortable in the car, and I won’t have to waste my kids’ college fund on chiropractic care later in life.
